What is the first word that comes to mind in relation to Batman? Okay, I’ll admit, there are likely a lot of words that could potentially come to mind, but in terms of the feeling Batman is trying to instill in his enemies, I think it’s safe to say that “fear” is one of them. This was driven home in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins when Bruce told Alfred he wanted the criminals to fear him as much as he fears bats.
In that film, there’s even a great scene that is told virtually from the perspective of the criminals. In many ways, it felt a whole lot like a slasher film, with the baddies getting picked off one by one, and the last man standing can only cry out “Where are you?” in terror as Batman hangs down from behind him, whispering the word “Here” in his hears before snatching him. We even get to see a similarly horrific scene near the beginning of Batman v Superman that really drives home why Batman is so at home in the shadows.

But have we actually thought about doing a Batman horror film? Horror master and Aquaman director James Wan has, as he revealed to Heroic Hollywood:
“In the past like most people I loved the idea of directing Batman, but a horror version of Batman. That would be a potential fantasy of mine, but I feel like he’s been done quite a fair bit. But, I do love the idea of doing an outright scary Batman. I feel like that’d be really cool.”
I have to say, I agree. A horror movie would be pretty cool to see Batman in, though I’ll admit I’d much prefer to see a detective version of the character (which we are presumably getting in Matt Reeves’ upcoming film. The solution? Give James Wan a DC Black film like Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and let him go nuts.
