Jason Blum Is In No Hurry To Make $100 Million-Dollar Movies, And Good For Him

Producer Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions have enjoyed a run of box office success for well over ten years now. Since producing the first Paranormal Activity, he has built a motion picture empire with low budget films that make well over their expense. From simple horror fares like Happy Death Day to Oscar-winners like Whiplash and continuing classics like Halloween, Blum has preferred lower cost with quality work. And that model has paid off exceptionally well.

In a recent interview with Observer, the topic of Blum’s low budget tendencies arose. When asked how he arrived at his micro-budget approach, the producer responded:

“I think the ‘how did we arrive at it’ is: I wanted to be my own boss. If I liked an actor and they weren’t famous I wanted to be able to cast the character. I wanted to be able to make the movie where the lead character dies after 25 minutes. And you can only do those kind of things if the budgets are low… The reason we’ve been able to stay disciplined about low budgets is I have no desire to make a $100 million-dollar movies. I think 99 percent of Hollywood producers, directors, and even actors think that if you have success, logic dictates you should make something more expensive. And I don’t believe that that has ever made sense to me and that I think is why we’ve been able to stick to our model for so long.”

While Blum has ventured into non-horror projects like BlacKkKlansman and HBO’s Sharp Objects, horror tends to the dealer’s choice. And why not? Since the ’80s, horror films have been the easiest films to make and tend to make loads of cash at the box office. Blumhouse has become the 21st century’s Dimension Films, but with a higher creative IQ. Most of the horror films they crank out favor quality over quantity and create franchise stories they keep the audience returning for more. Moreover, with Get OutUs, and the next two Halloween films under his banner, Jason Blum is in no need of assistance in his production choices. He’s got this. You do you, boo-boo.
