Jason Segel Says A Piece Of Advice Given To Him By Judd Apatow Changed His Life

Actor Jason Segel, who first debuted on scren in Judd Apatow’s NBC series, Freaks and Geeks, has since went on to star in films such as Knocked UpForgetting Sarah Marshall, and I Love You Man films, and one of the most liked television series of all time in How I Met Your Mother. As a young actor, Segel took some advice from Apatow that turned out to, in his own words, change his life. While speaking on the Today show, Segel spoke about what Apatow’s words of counsel.

“Well I’ve always written. When I was like 21 years old and we had just finished a show called Freaks and Geeks, Judd Apatow, who made that show and a bunch of our movies took a bunch of us aside. What he said to me, actually, is, ‘You’re kind of a weird guy. The only way you are going to make it is if you write. It changed the course of my life and my whole career. So, I’m kind of constantly writing.”

While many folks likely think of Segel as just an actor, he has several writing credits to his name, including Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Muppets, The Five-Year Engagement, and Sex Tape, in which he co-starred with Cameron Diaz.

I enjoy Freaks and Geeks, however I didn’t watch the show until years after it ended. My first experience with Segel was his character in Knocked Up, which I found to be very relatable, which is one reason the actor stuck with me. Of course, to me Segel will always be Marshall Erikson from How I Met Your Mother.
