Jeremy Renner Turned Down A Role In The Original Hellboy Movie

Casting a movie seems like it would be a simple enough task. I mean, who would turn down a chance to make money by playing make-believe for a few months? Jeremy Renner, that’s who!

Renner was offered the role of Agent Myers in Guillermo del Toro’s 2004 Hellboy, but ultimately turned it down. Speaking with the Wondery podcast, Renner had this to say:

“I was just reading the script and [thinking] like, ‘I don’t get this…’ I just couldn’t connect to it. I said, ‘I can’t find a way in (to this character), I don’t know what I’d be doing,’ so I had to say no.”

That makes sense. If you can’t wrap your head around who and what you’re portraying then you owe it to the filmmakers and audience to pass on it. A poor performance in a film can take people out of the movie and ruin it. When asked if he regretted his choice he followed up with:

“There’s zero regrets, zero. Most of the time it’s like, ‘Oh, I’m glad I didn’t do it,’ and it made sense to me. Not just Hellboy or whatever it was, and I’m not saying that it’s a good or bad movie, it’s not about that… I just wouldn’t have fit there.”

I may be reading too much into that, but it sounds like he wasn’t a fan or didn’t see it. Personally, I like the original Hellboy but it’s nothing amazing. It has a cult following but neither it nor its sequel did very well at the box office. The recent reboot was so poorly received that it spent less than 40 days in theaters and grossed an abysmal $21.9 million.
