Jermaine Fowler Talks Playing Cool Antagonist in Appofeniacs | INTERVIEW

Jermain Fowler in Appofeniacs

Appofeniacs, Chris Marrs Piliero’s deepfake horror thriller, opened in U.S. theaters on October 2, 2026. Its ensemble mixes rising names with familiar faces, and one of the most recognizable is Jermaine Fowler, the stand-up comic who became Prince Lavelle in Coming 2 America. In Piliero’s film, he plays Cedrick, one more stranger caught in the fallout of a young man’s fabricated videos.

Duke (Aaron Holliday) treats deepfakes as a party trick and a tool for petty revenge. His clips spread, and each one pulls new people into a chain of misunderstandings that ends in bloodshed. The story unfolds as interlocking vignettes whose links surface gradually.

The title riffs on apophenia, the tendency to see meaningful patterns where none exist. The fakes matter less than how readily people believe them, and the horror grows from paranoia and confirmation bias.

Alongside Holliday and Fowler, the cast includes Paige Searcy as Lazzy, Sean Gunn as prop-maker Clinto Binto, Simran Jehani as Poppy, Will Brandt, Amogh Kapoor, Michael Abbott Jr. and Harley Bronwyn.

Fowler plays Cedrick, one of the ensemble whose lives intersect with Duke’s spreading fakes. The film’s structure gives no single character the spotlight for long, so his part works like the others: a person going about ordinary life until a fabricated clip changes the rules.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta spoke with Jermain Fowler on his role, acting with Aaron Holliday, and AI in Appofeniacs.

Jermaine Fowler spent his early career in nights at open mics around Times Square, sharpening material in front of tourists and fellow comics. By 2012, he was touring comedy clubs and college campuses nationwide, including runs with CollegeHumor and Comedy Central on Campus. That same year he was named one of Variety’s “New Faces” at the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, a showcase that has launched many comedy careers.

He moved into television with MTV2’s Guy Code in 2013. A year later, he co-created and starred in the truTV sketch series Friends of the People. In 2015, he produced and starred in his first stand-up special, Give ‘Em Hell, Kid, which he licensed to Showtime.

His breakout came in 2017 with the CBS sitcom Superior Donuts. Fowler starred as Franco Wicks, an ambitious young artist working in an aging Chicago doughnut shop opposite Judd Hirsch, and he also served as an executive producer. The show ran two seasons. That September, he was the on-camera announcer for the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards. He also had a recurring role on HBO’s Crashing from 2017 to 2019 and voiced characters on BoJack Horseman and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.

On the big screen, Fowler appeared in Boots Riley’s Sorry to Bother You (2018) and Buffaloed (2019). His biggest year was 2021. He played Prince Lavelle Junson, Eddie Murphy’s long-lost son, in Coming 2 America, and Black Panther Party member Mark Clark in the Oscar-winning Judas and the Black Messiah. He followed with the horror-comedy The Blackening, which premiered at TIFF in 2022, then Terrestrial and Eenie Meanie in 2025.

In November 2025, Fowler joined Tracy Morgan in Crutch, a Paramount+ spinoff of The Neighborhood, playing Morgan’s adult son Jake. Appofeniacs adds another genre credit to a career that keeps moving between stand-up, sitcoms and film.

Fowler built his career on comedy, and The Blackening already showed how his timing can sharpen a horror film rather than soften it. Appofeniacs walks the same line, a darkly comic thriller about a very modern fear. It is now playing in theaters.
