Joaquin Phoenix In Talks To Play Joker In Todd Phillips’ Standalone Film

Several months ago, it was revealed that Warner Bros. had plans for more than just the DC Extended Universe with their comic book properties. As Christopher Nolan proved with his Dark Knight Trilogy, some DC characters have more than enough to them to hold up in their own universes.

The first film to take advantage of that would be a standalone Joker film directed by The Hangover helmer Todd Phillips. It’s been months since we’ve heard anything, and now, Variety is reporting that there is a contender for the Clown Prince of Crime himself.

According to the outlet, Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to play the Joker in the upcoming film. While talks for this could definitely go through, Phillips has reportedly stated that Phillips wants Phoenix, and that Phoenix has agreed to the role. Now it’s just a matter of bringing in reps, negotiating the actual compensation, and signing on that dotted line.

To be clear, this will be a wholly separate film from anything in the DCEU, including Suicide Squad and whatever Jared Leto is doing with the character in those series of film. This alternate take on the character is set to be an ’80s gritty crime drama, and last we heard, they were still hoping to get Martin Scorsese involved as producer.
