Joel Schumacher Talks Batman Possibly Being Trapped In The Closet

Holy bunions Batman! Could the Caped Crusader be gay? In case you’re wondering where this talk is coming from, thank Batman and Robin director Joel Schumacher. Recently, Vulture conducted an interview with the 79-year-old director and producer. Of course, the topic of Batman and Robin and Batman Forever came up. Depending on your values, those film entries may be the most offensive to fans of the source material and arguably the worst in the franchise. But hey at least we got some pretty cheesy Batman McDonald’s tie-ins.

Apparently, there are plenty of fans who also felt there were gay overtones when it came to Batman and Robin’s relationship. So, when asked whether or not he “wink” addressed Batman and Robin’s sexuality, what did Schumacher have to say about Batman’s sexual orientation?

First of all, Schumacher said, “If I wasn’t gay, they would never say those things,” but as far as directly answering the question:

“No. Nor do I ever think Batman and Robin are gay. There were a lot of people who I would say, in one particular community, wanted George Clooney to be gay so badly.”

The legendary mega director and producer also addressed criticism that his influence on Batman and Robin made the franchise gayer.

To which Schumacher answered:

“This all started way before me. Long before I came along, someone wrote a whole thing about what the real message of fairy tales and children’s stories are. Snow White was all about having bad stepmothers. And Batman and Robin are two homosexual men living in a cave, living together. There’s always been this thing about Batman and Robin being gay.”

Schumacher’s Batman films are notorious for the addition of those S&M inspired nipples on the exterior of the Batsuit. There was also that one moment where Val Kilmer spouts something along the lines of him not being the marrying type. Holy Hole in a doughnut! Could there have been something up with Billionaire Playboy Bruce Wayne’s decision to hang out late at night pummeling savage criminals and deviants with a young sidekick at his side? I don’t think so. Besides what’s more outlandish than Schumacher’s choices would have to be whoever drew Robin in that revealing little outfit.
