John Wick: Chapter 3 Takes In $5.9M On Thursday, Predicted To Top Avengers

It cannot be overstated how much of a surprise franchise John Wick has turned out to be. Given Keanu Reeves’ track record, I wasn’t really counting on the film being the perfect marriage of the man’s acting abilities and physical skills, but that’s exactly what it ended up being. When the film hit theaters, it impressed audiences with its action choreography and its surprising hard, cementing its role as a new franchise in the making.

And then John Wick: Chapter 2 came out. With surprise hits like this, it’s often difficult to capture lightning in a bottle, but they did it once again. And with John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, they’ve done it yet again, and it seems to be reflected in the Thursday box office preview figures.

According to Deadline, the threequel snagged $5.9 million on the day, which is an amazing jump from the $950K the first movie did and the $2.2M the second one did. The first film went on to make $88.7 million worldwide and the second to make $171 million. While I don’t necessarily think John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is destined to make $400 million worldwide based on these numbers, it’s clear enthusiasm hasn’t waned (and, who knows, maybe $400 million is attainable).

As of this writing, the film is expected to take in $50 million, which is quite the step up from John Wick: Chapter 2‘s $30 million. Clearly, so long as the movies keep being good, this is a series audiences are eager to return to year every couple of years.

And as a side note, this is also the movie expected to top Avengers: Endgame for the first time since the Marvel flick hit theaters. Endgame is anticipated to hit around $30 million, meaning this should be an easy target for John Wick.
