Johnny Depp Talks the Concern Disney Execs Had With His Portrayal of Jack Sparrow

Can we all agree that Johnny Depp was robbed of an Academy Award for playing Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean:  The Curse of the Black Pearl? To even be nominated for a comedic performance is an achievement in its own right. Rarely do comedic roles get nominated. It’s even rarer for them to win.

Captain Jack Sparrow is an amalgam of Errol Flynn, Paul Lynde, and just a touch of Keith Richards. The Academy judges weren’t the only ones who didn’t know what to think about Depp’s Jack Sparrow character. The Disney executives weren’t initially sold on the way Depp played the role. Depp spoke about this with EuroNews. You can check out what he ha to say below.

“They were nervous, they were afraid no one would understand a word Captain Jack said. I got calls from them asking, ‘Is he drunk? Are you drunk? What’s the thing with his hands?’ I wasn’t discouraged in the slightest, it fuels me. I know that if they’re worried, I’m doing my job. When they asked me to bring it down, I turned it up.”

I would be confident in saying Captain Jack is likely always at least a little bit drunk as well as being quite mad. But in the best possible way. I hold Captain Jack very high on the character list I think he’s in the same range as characters that may originate on a comic book page. Perhaps even in the same discussion as characters from a certain space western.

Sure, the role became tired to some fans, but I think it’s because in the last two films it seems like they forgot how to write for Jack. Many of Sparrow’s lines in the sounded forced. I assume most of you know that Disney is sailing off without Depp and Captain Jack. Karen Gillian is rumored to be starring in a female-centric adventure. Gillan is awesome as Nebula, and would likely make her pirate role memorable, but we need Jack, or both, how about both?

Jack Sparrow has also brought about one of the most unusual, but incredibly accurate description of a character, or really anything ever. The description comes from a review of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl by Spence D. You can find it below.

“Depp easily steals the show, delivering a quirky performance that has him teetering around like a flamboyant dandy with cerebral palsy.”

What are your thoughts on Captain. Jack. Sparrow? Let us know, in the comments down below, savvy?
