Baby Yoda is all the rage. The adorable little guy has taken over the meme world as the most popular template since his arrival. It’s quite an accomplishment to have kept Baby Yoda a secret until he debuted on screen and won over everyone’s hearts.
In this day and age, it’s extremely difficult to keep something like this under wraps, especially when it’s Star Wars. Creator of The Mandalorian, Jon Favreau, explained how and why he felt it was so important to guard Baby Yoda from being leaked or being used to promote the series while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, you can check out what he had to say below.
“I think that part of what people really value is to be surprised and delighted, and I think that’s becoming all too rare. It’s very difficult to keep secrets about projects you’re working on. By holding back on that one product, we knew that we may have had the disadvantage of not having toys available day and date, but what we got in exchange was an excitement surrounding the character, because everybody felt like they discovered him together. That emulated more what my experience growing up was like.”

Favreau had the following to say about Disney trusting him on keeping Baby Yoda a secret.
“Yeah, they understood the value of it. I felt that if we really wanted to connect with the Star Wars fans, we had to let them discover the story as it was unfolding. The marketing team and the leadership were all supportive of what my instincts were, and I think it paid off really well because now people are excited to tune in every week to see what happens.”
I can see why Disney would want to use this angle to promote the show, but I think the way things played out, having Baby Yoda be a surprise was the right move, and it’s nice to see the House of Mouse listening to their content creators. A new episode of The Mandalorian drops tomorrow on Disney+, until then get your fix of Baby Yoda from the video below.
