Jon Watts Exits Fantastic Four – Expected To Direct Spider-Man 4

In today's Barside Buzz we are sharing some more Fantastic Four rumors including a possible further delay for the movie.

Some news that broke Friday was that Jon Watts exits Fantastic Four. However he is expected to direct Spider-Man 4 still. We may be a little late covering this, but as the coverage of this announcement broke, one of the trades Deadline also had a bit of extra information related to the fact that Sony execs still expect Watts to be back for Spider-Man 4.

As for Fantastic Four, Watts just need a breather. He has made three Spider-Man movies in a very short space of time and especially that last one must have been very hectic. We know that scripts were unfinished when filming began. Considering all the moving pieces in that movie and how good it turned out, I think Watts did a great job.

Said Kevin Feige, president, Marvel Studios and Louis D’Esposito, co-president, Marvel Studios: “Collaborating with Jon on the Spider-Man films has been a true pleasure. We were looking forward to continuing our work with him to bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU but understand and are supportive of his reasons for stepping away. We are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to work together again at some point down the road.”

Watts said that “Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life-changing experience for me. I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life.”

As for working together again, this is what Deadline published in addition.

Sony and its Spider-Man producers have made it clear they expect to reunite Watts with Holland and Zendaya to continue the series. Watts hasn’t officially dropped out of that franchise, but if it were to happen, it does sound like it would be down the road.

I’m rather surprised by this whole scenario. I totally understand why Watts needs a break and why Fantastic Four may be coming around too quickly. Though, I’m rather surprised that Sony are adamant Watts needs to come back for Spider-Man 4. I would have guessed a new director would have come in for the Peter Parker college years. Not that I don’t think Watts would do a great job mind you. This just seemed like the perfect time for a small change in tone. Still, nothing is official yet with Spider-Man 4. However it’s good to hear that we likely will get another Spider-Man movie in the MCU. It’s also good to know Zendaya will return alongside Holland if the studios gets their way.

I guess we can also rule out those rumors of Watts directing the upcoming ‘Grammar Rodeo’ project over at Lucasfilm. I don’t see Watts jumping into a Star Wars show just after quitting Fantastic Four. So yeah, don’t expect to see his name attached when that High Republic show finally gets officially announced.
