Jurassic World: Dominion may only be the beginning.

It almost feels like most big franchises have started to draw to a close. Star Wars’ Skywalker saga came to an end, The MCU’s Infinity Saga is done, and with Jurassic World coming next year, it seems only natural this third movie will cap off the trilogy. After all, it is the third movie in what was expected to be a trilogy — at least by many fans. That being said, it’s not like the filmmakers ever said, at any point, that this franchise is expected to come to a close after three movies. 

You all know where this is going. Jurassic World: Dominion is the third film in the Jurassic World trilogy, and we are expecting big things from it. But don’t expect this to be the end of a trilogy for the franchise. Speaking with Collider, producer Frank Marshall stated that Jurassic World: Dominion would be “the start of a new era.” He even gave a flat-out “no” when asked if the movie was being seen as an end.

“The dinosaurs are now on the mainland amongst us, and they will be for quite some time, I hope,” Marshall said. 

If you’ll recall, the closing minutes of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom saw a host of dinosaurs released into the world. What was once a novelty restricted to a few small islands was now set to become the new reality. I expected that Jurassic World: Dominion to pick up where that left off — and it looks like that is the case.

However, based on Marshall’s comments, it almost sounds like this problem won’t actually be resolved. If we are to take his comments at face value, the new film will open up an entire realm of possibilities. It almost sounds as though future movies will explore the “new normal” of mankind living alongside these dinosaurs.

But will we see the return of Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt? We really don’t know. Perhaps this film will see the end of their journeys and the start of someone else’s. That being said, we live in a world that doesn’t need trilogies. The MCU has proven movies can exist beyond the three-movie structure, and it would make sense for Jurassic World to embrace this reality.

However, this all depends on audiences. Will they accept this? Will they come out to see Jurassic World: Dominion in big enough droves to warrant the continuation? It is definitely hard to say at this point. Not only were audiences super cruel to it (though they did give the film $1.3 billion in business), but we are living in a post-COVID-19 world. Will blockbusters exist in the same capacity in the future?

Only time will tell.
