Kathleen Kennedy On George Lucas’ Feelings About the Sequel Trilogy

For years, we all hear rumors of “7,8, and 9” the remaining chapters in the Star Wars saga. Back then, none of us really thought we’d ever see them. Then in 2012, Disney bought the franchise and announced the films were on their way. The films have, to say the least, been met with mixed feelings from fans, and apparently, Mr. Lucas isn’t too happy with them.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who was sort of George Lucas’s padawan for years, addressed the way Lucas feels about the sequel trilogy while speaking to Rolling Stone, and says it’s hard for any creator to let go, and that Lucas may have underestimated this, you can check out what she had to say below.

“Personally, I’ve had a relationship with George going back to all of us meeting before making Raiders of the Lost Ark. So this is a long, 35-plus years that I’ve known George, and I continue to be very, very good friends with George. And I think there’s plenty of examples where people create something that is fundamental to who they are, where it’s difficult letting go and watching that become something different. So I think initially, that was difficult for George — I don’t think he anticipated how hard that would be. And J.J. came into it with such enthusiasm and, frankly, reverence for Star Wars and for George, and had to find what was personal for him. He had to make it his own. Every director who comes into a movie has to make something their own; they have to find themselves in the storytelling. And then that’s going to become a different point of view. And I think that’s all George was reacting to.”

An old interview with Mark Hamill from IGN revealed that George Lucas had his own plans for how the franchise would end (including a Luke Skywalker death in Episode 9), saying:

“George had an overall arc – if he didn’t have all the details, he had sort of an overall feel for where the [sequel trilogy was] going – but this one’s more like a relay race. You run and hand the torch off to the next guy, he picks it up and goes.

“Ryan didn’t write what happens in 9 – he was going to hand it off to, originally, Colin Trevorrow and now J.J. […] It’s an ever-evolving, living, breathing thing. Whoever’s onboard gets to play with the life-size action figures that we all are.”

So why didn’t he finish the saga himself before selling the franchise? This is something I’ve wondered for quite some time now. Lucas was potentially the only person to have a card to play against Disney, he should have negotiated to finish the story he started so long ago, and then Disney could take over and do whatever they wanted.

Should George Lucas have finished the saga himself before handing Disney the reigns? Let us know in the comments down below!
