Train Wreck Footage Will Be Cut From Bird Box

Tragedies happen on a daily basis in our world. From the most natural loss of life at old age to terror caused by evil people and everything in between, it can hurt to experience loss. As human beings, we often seek to avoid things that remind us of life lost in violent or accidental ways and when something does make us remember a tragic event, it can be incredibly stressful. This was the case with Netflix’s Bird Box, the mega-hit from last year, and its use of footage from the 2013 Lac-Mégnatic train crash. The horrible event that happened in Quebec, Canada resulted in 47 deaths.

The movie made use of the footage for entertainment purposes as part of the results of the creatures terrorizing the population of planet earth, and this resulted in many people being upset with the filmmakers and Netflix. Despite originally saying they would not remove the footage, Variety is reporting that Netflix has told them the opposite now. In an email to the outlet, Netflix stated:

“Netflix and the filmmakers of Bird Box have decided to replace the clip. We’re sorry for any pain caused to the Lac-Mégantic community.”

Quebec Culture and Communications minister, Nathalie Roy, tweeted out a response HERE and Variety provided the following translation from French:

“This gesture was expected out of respect for the victims of this horrific drama, their loved ones and the entire community of #LacMégantic. This result shows that by being in solidarity and by putting our efforts together, anything is possible.”

This is reminiscent of movies like Spider-Man removing scenes involving New York City’s World Trade Center Towers after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. It is a simple way to help prevent people from being surprised with footage of something from a tragic event in their lives.

The company that provided the stock footage of the wreck, Pond5, is reaching out to other customers to ensure they understand the nature of the train wreck footage.

Are you glad Netflix has made this choice? Let us know in the comments below.
