Kevin Feige Runs Marvel, But His First Love Is Star Wars

I’m convinced that Star Wars is at a turning point here. So far Disney’s approach since taking over the franchise simply hasn’t worked as well as they’d hoped. A rush to get Episodes 7-9 out there has left us with a trilogy which doesn’t even feel connected to each part, never mind the supposed end of the whole damn saga. We don’t know what will happen next for Star Wars. We only know that sometime in the future Marvel president Kevin Feige is going to be producing a Star Wars movie. I have always thought Feige would be a great replacement for Kathleen Kennedy who’s contract is up next year, though my colleagues are all convinced running Star Wars and Marvel is too much even for Feige.

So will it be one movie, a series of movies, or something else. we are going to have to wait and see on that one. As for whether Feige is the right person to change Star Wars‘ fortunes, one person is in no doubt. Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo recently spoke to THR, and he was clear about how much Feige loves Star Wars and gave some insight into what he will bring.

Star Wars is Kevin’s first and true love. He’s a man who has a very, very large basement filled with enough Star Wars paraphernalia to fill a museum. Whatever he does with it is going to be passionate, emotional and unique.”

I have said before that for me Star Wars needs to move into the past or the future. It needs to step away from almost all canon and have some freedom to craft a story that creates its own magic. Instead, I feel like every movie has been designed around the nostalgic magic of that original trilogy. This is the territory where you are going to piss off the fan base. Taking a beloved character and make him different, all the while changing the way fans are supposed to feel about certain previous iconic moments? This has not worked. Craft a new tale, from scratch and decide where this is going in the end, before you start filming.

I’d be very happy to see Star Wars adopt the MCU model and stop with the necessity to craft trilogies. The lack of connectivity to what came before could be refreshing and Feige would do what he could to deliver. If nothing else Fiege has an eye for creatives he can work with. That does not always happen as Feige has said himself, but when it does, magic happens.

Is Joe Russo right, is Kevin Feige the right man for Star Wars, will he deliver a good movie? Leave your thoughts below as always.
