Rogue One’s Gareth Edwards FINALLY Locks Down New Sci-Fi Film

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen something from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story director Gareth Edwards. And you know what? I don’t blame him. From everything we know, Tony Gilroy quietly took over directing after Lucasfilm saw an early cut of the film. And in the years since the movie’s release, he’s been very silent about the whole thing. In short, he’s been playing ball with the studio, and that’s admirable as all hell.

It’s because of that that I’m happy to see he’s landed back on his feet, locking down a new sci-fi movie over at New Regency. Variety is reporting that his new film is based on an original idea by Edwards, and that it is a “near-future sci-fi story.” The hope is to cast the film and shoot this summer.

Personally, I’m very interested to see what comes of this movie. Gareth Edwards is one of those poor souls of the current generation who made one small indie movie before being scooped up and brought into blockbuster hell. The first big movie we got from him was the 2014 version of Godzilla, which led to the MonsterVerse.

From there, he jumped right into Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which hit theaters in 2016, to mostly critical acclaim.

However, seeing as only done one smaller movie, he’s never really had a chance to develop a voice of his own. And in the case of Rogue One, he was eventually pushed out in favor of Gilroy.

This new untitled film will hopefully give him two things. One: another chance in the director’s chair and two: an opportunity to express himself as a filmmaker. Because, apart from Monsters, his first film, we really don’t know much of what makes a Gareth Edwards film. At the very least, he reportedly took his time on this one, making sure it was exactly the right project to take before jumping in, which is a good sign.

What do you think? Are you excited to see what he can finally bring to the table in a smaller movie? Let us know your thoughts down below!
