Kevin Smith Says The Batman Trailer Was ‘Impressive’

Well, we all knew this was coming, and I for one welcome them. Director and ultra nerd Kevin Smith has given his thoughts on the trailer for The Batman. While Smith has been a bit over-emotional with his visits to the sets of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, it’s always nice to have him weigh in on nerd content. After all, his podcast was originally called The Fatman on Batman and is now titled Fatman Beyond.

“This trailer was impressive. I was always going to be curious about what they did with of course. And I was on board regardless. But fuck man. This is like the Batman movie we dreamed about as kids. Like, could you imagine if somebody treated it super fucking seriously? Eric Carrasco pointed it out, like, ‘This looks like Greg Rucka Batman.’ Like, the one that feels rooted hardcore in reality but still had room for the fantasy elements of crime in Gotham.”

Well, I have to say Nolan’s trilogy was pretty serious. However, I do see what Kevin Smith is talking about, I think. The Batman, seems like an R-rated film. While the Caped Crusader has always been a darker, and as they say grittier hero, the character has never crossed that rating line. Will he this time? I mean, maybe? The big reason for PG-13 is the film is available to a much wider audience that’s able to watch the film unaccompanied, and studios like this factor.

However, we did get an R-rated Joker film last year, and it worked out very well. I think it would be a huge win for DC and would score many points with fans if they were bold enough to release an R-rated Batman film. And while part of the way I feel is wishful thinking, I do think it’s, hmm, somewhat likely. They might release two versions, one with an R-rating and one with a PG-13 rating. I hope DC does go bold, and I imagine I’m not alone.
