Knives Out Director Rian Johnson Shares Outline Page From Notebook

I think we can all agree that Rian Johnson is a master of storytelling. He’s not only created the best Star Wars film in decades (this point is inarguable) and has since gone on to create an all-new original mystery franchise with Knives Out. The film is a textbook whodunit story but with plenty of unexpected twists and turns along the way, and is probably my favorite film of last year.

In fact, each time I’ve seen it, I’ve rolled my eyes and sworn at the screen because of how obnoxiously well-written it is. Its characters are perfectly realized, its tone fun and quippy without being obnoxious, but most importantly, its structure is sound as hell.

Now, in a tweet from Johnson, he shared some insight into his process. Take a look:

“Have mentioned it in a few writing-centric interviews, so I dug up my barely legible moleskin notebook outline for @KnivesOut. This is how I always diagram stuff out before I start writing. (Spoilers… I guess?)”

As you can see, in one of his notebooks, he has a timeline broken down into three acts. So, if you’re like me and you spent way too much mental real estate on figuring out where the act breaks were in this movie, wait no longer. He has that covered.

What do you think of the little timeline he drew? Do you find it as inspirational as I do? Let us know your thoughts down below!
