During this weekend’s Star Wars Celebration fan convention in London, it was finally revealed that Lars Mikkelsen is playing Grand Admiral Thrawn in the upcoming Disney+ ‘Ahsoka’ series. LRM Online was the first outlet to officially reveal the casting back in 2021. Mikkelsen joined the cast of the Star Wars series up on stage near the end of the panel saying it was “wonderful” to be able to be cast in the live-action version of the character after voicing him before.

While a lot of fans recognize Thrawn from the ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ animated series, he was originally created by Timothy Zahn in a series of Star Wars novels released in the 90s that followed the third film in the Star Wars Franchise, Return of the Jedi. Unfortunately, after Disney purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, Zahn’s books and the content in them were removed from the Star Wars canon in order to make the not-so-popular recent film trilogy.
Thankfully, Dave Filoni brought Thrawn back in ‘Star Wars: Rebels’ and was able to keep a lot of his character intact. The events of this series take place between the prequel “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” and the original sci-fi sensation “Star Wars: A New Hope”.

Thrawn was first teased in season 2 of ‘The Mandalorian’ on Disney+, during Chapter 13: The Jedi when we first met the live-action version of Ahsoka Tano, played by Rosario Dawson, where she demands to know where to find Thrawn. Since then, it’s been a waiting game for fans until this weekend when we learned that he will be featured in the upcoming ‘Ahsoka’ series in August.
