The fact that Dwarves will be present in the show is pretty much a given considering the era being explored. At this point the Dwarves’ still had many large kingdoms including Moria at it’s peak. Also given the nature of Dwarven history it would have seemed odd to not have their leader, or at least one of their leaders be known as Durin. As for Dwarven females? Well, of course they kinda made fun of them in The Two Towers movie, but as yet we have never seen Dwarven women on screen, or really have much to describe them to us from Tolkien’s books. For example. the beard joke in The Two Towers is artistic license. Tolkien never stated they had beards.

Here is what Tolkien did say, that only a third of the population were female, so they generally stayed in their most secure places. It’s also why so little Dwarven men ever marry. However, he also said when they do travel, they look so much like male Dwarves that people can’t tell them apart. However, for me, that’s easy enough to play with. All female Dwarves disguise themselves as no different form the men when they travel to protect them. There you go.
I guess what I’m saying is, that this choice makes sense logically for the show. However, it’s also a huge risk to take in terms of the design choices. I don’t think we need to see bearded women that are less feminine than some of the male Dwarves in The Hobbit. I’m therefore very pleased that Dwarven women are not going to have beards in this.
