Mads Mikkelson comments on those Fantastic Beasts rumors, and says he knows nothing. Mikkelson was hotly rumored to be replacing Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald and WB are going to have to move quickly on this casting because Fantastic Beast 3 is ready to go. Perhaps this lends more credence to how quickly the Mikkelson story hit? However Mikkelson was also a favorite fan casting, so it all just felt so right.

Before we get any further here is what Mikkelson said about Fantastic Beasts. Mikkelson was speaking to IGN recently about his new movie Chaos Walking.

“Oh, that is on the rumor basis as we speak, so I know as much as you do from the newspapers. So I’m waiting for that phone call.”

Now Mikkelson could be playing coy here. If WB has reached out to him, but he hasn’t yet agreed, I don’t think he’d tell anyone. Actors rarely comment on contract talks they are having until they are signed. Well, at least until years later when stories come out. However, it could also be that the story was not correct to begin with, or talks never went past an early feeling out stage? As of right now, all we can say is that Mikkelson says he’s waiting for a call. If Mikkelson really hasn’t had a call yet, I have to wonder whether WB are looking elsewhere?

This is a hard situation to call either way. Personally, I think Mikkelson would be great as Gellert Grindelwald. I have high hopes for Fantastic Beasts 3, yet I wasn’t a huge fan of the first two movies. It always felt like the story I want to see, was the story between Dumbledore and Grindelwald. I envisioned a more mature tale than the Harry Potter series, especially given the backdrop of World War II. So far, I have found the story too bloated and hoped that would change next time.
