Mark Strong has appeared in a variety of superhero/comic book franchises like Kick-Ass, Green Lantern, Kingsman and as of this weekend, New Line/Warner Bros. Pictures SHAZAM! Personally I wish that Strong would have had an opportunity to portray Sinestro as the yellow lantern, but as we know that was never going to happen thanks to the mess that became to be Green Lantern. Interestingly enough, Strong was almost another villain in a different superhero franchise.
In an interview with ComingSoon.net Strong was almost cast as the villainous mutant Sebastian Shaw in 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: First Class back in 2011. The role as we know ended up going to Kevin Bacon and Strong gives us the reason why.
“Matthew Vaughn did ask me to do ‘X-Men: First Class,’” Strong said. “There was a bad guy in ‘X-Men’ that Kevin Bacon played. Because I speak German it just seemed so logical having worked with him that I would play that part, but I think at that point we both felt… I think I had just done Blackwood in ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and it had been just too many bad guys very recently. So that one we didn’t go down the path of that.”
It’s interesting to look back and think of what that could have looked like, the classic “would have, could have, should have”, but I think he made the right choice by not joining that franchise. Although at the New Line/Warner Bros. panel this past Saturday at WonderCon in Anaheim, he did mention that he really enjoys playing villains in films. He once again had the opportunity to do so in SHAZAM! as the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana as he goes up against Billy Batson aka Shazam, played by Asher Angel and Zachary Levi.
