While promoting Black Panther, actor Martin Freeman appeared alongside Andy Serkis on Joe.ie. Martin was asked if he would have any interest in a Star Wars role, and if he had engaged in any talks with the powers that be, and Freeman acknowledged that he has had talks (albeit indirect ones) about appearing in the Star Wars Universe:
“Well of course, of course I would be. No not directly, no, no, I mean, indirectly yeah. I had a chat with the folks a few years ago, but no its not been a direct thing.”

Martin never specifies who he spoke with, or even what rank they had in the company. So it is difficult to say how if these talks were official. This sounds more like a casual conversation that could very well lead to something official, as opposed to a set meeting at Lucasfilm. While I fully believe Martin Freeman could pull off the role of a Jedi, I think fits in much better as a high ranking officer in The First Order.
Martin is probably most well-known for appearing as Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit trilogy, though he has a few other notable roles including playing Tim on the British version of The Office, as well as Lester Nygaard on the FX show Fargo. He can next be seen in Black Panther as Everett K. Ross, a character he first portrayed in Captain America: Civil War.
