While his infamous character showed up at the end of the first season of Cobra Kai, Actor Martin Kove has been promoted to series regular and that likely means his John Kreese character is set to play a bigger role in Season 2. Kove recently spoke with SYFY WIRE, and said that his John Kreese character won’t be exactly the same as we remember him.
“You know, it’s really interesting, the darkness that prevailed through John Kreese in those days is remembered by a lot of people, the interesting thing about what we’re going to do, is maybe he won’t be so dark, but he’ll still be on another agenda. Because, as you know by the 10th episode, it looks like he’s got it all together. But maybe he doesn’t, and that’s what’s really interesting: Maybe he doesn’t have it all together, and he’s a human being after all – which is exciting for me to play as an actor.

This is smilar to what the show did with William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence. While Johnny was still an ass, and more or less himself, the series showed us that there was more to him, and fans loved it. This an aspect that is definitely a product of the more in depth television format, as much more about a character can be explored during the course of a season as opposed to movie.
I throughly enjoyed the first season, sure, part of it was nostalgia, but it was well planned and well made.
