There’s more to come after What If…? Marvel Studios Victoria Alonso, VP of film production revealed a Marvel animation branch, and teased there will be more MCU animation on the way. Alonso was speaking with Variety at this year’s NALIP Media Summit. Here is what Alonso said as per the trade.
“We’re going to have our animation branch and mini studio, and there will be more to come from that as well,” Alonso said. “We’re super excited about animation, which is my first love.”
Many fans have for years lamented the animation side of Marvel Studios. Animation is definitely the one area in which DC are streets ahead of Marvel. Most of the current Marvel themed animation is very kid focused Saturday morning cartoons. Now I like kid focused Saturday morning cartoons, but even I can’t really go Disney’s Marvel content. Prior to the purchase of Marvel by Disney there was a magnificent show on the go in Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Sadly, the Avengers Assemble it was replaced with is trash in comparison.
First thing this studio should do is hire back the team that made Avengers: EMH. That’s just my own opinion, but I can’t see that ever happening. There remain countless opportunities for Marvel Studios to tell some good animated tales though. Especially with the Multiverse now cracked open. Where DC has done a great job is just ignoring the movie side and filming great comic book arcs. Therefore there’s no reason why Marvel Studios could not copy this approach, in addition to content which actually is a part of the MCU.
What would you like to see now there is a Marvel animation branch? Would you want to see MCU related content only? Or, would you prefer it if there were no restrictions to where the animated side could go? If there’s more to come after What If…? what should it be?
