After months of searching, Marvel finds its Blade director in Bassam Tariq! The Blade movie starring Mahershala Ali isn’t yet dated officially, but has been announced for quite some time as coming. However other than Ali, there hasn’t been much talk of any other talent involved. According to Deadline the search has been on for a director and Marvel has landed upon Bassam Tariq.
If you haven’t seen Mogul Mowgli, like me, then you may not have heard of Tariq. However Deadline reports the director is currently in talks with Marvel to helm Blade. Deadline reached out to Marvel who of course had no comment. Marvel Studios would not announce anything till they’re ready. If the report is true that talks are still ongoing then there’s no way Marvel talks about Tariq, yet. However that’s how the trades work isn’t it?
I’m sure, like many of the directors Marvel chooses, Tariq has sold them on a pitch. I would guess that means he is interested in the job. I therefore doubt it will take too long for Marvel to finalize this process. After all, this would be a huge movie for Tariq’s career prospects.
According to the same report Osei-Kuffour will pen the script. Deadline reports that Marvel Studios went back and forth over whether to hire a writer/director or separate the roles. Separating the director and writer roles was the way they decided to go. So I guess it all depends on what Tariq thinks of the script work by Osei-Kuffour.
This is hardly an unusual practice for Marvel Studios. In fact, the majority of MCU movies were made this way, as have all the Disney+ series. Mahershala Ali is a big name right now and Blade could be huge for him and Marvel. However, as always, first we need a good story, and then someone needs to make it into a good movie. Let’s hope this team of Osei-Kuffour and Bassam Tariq will shine. That’s if talks all go well of course.
