Marvel Developing Wonder Man Series For Disney+

Barside Buzz coverage looks at claim Endgame writers Markus and McFeely are consulting with Marvel, plus a rumor that Wonder Man may be dead.

A new report from THR says Marvel developing Wonder Man as a series for Disney+. The show is being developed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Danielle Cretton and Andrew Guest (Brooklyn Nine-Nine). The show is in the early stages of development according to the trade. Check it out.

Wonder Man is the latest Marvel superhero to get the screen treatment.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton has teamed up with Andrew Guest, a writer-producer on comedies such as Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Community, to tackle a live-action series featuring the longtime Marvel character.

Guest will serve as head writer of the series, while Cretton will exec produce and possibly direct an episode or more. Cretton is working via his overall deal with Marvel Studios, signed late last year in the glow of Shang-Chi’s success.

Development for what is being titled Wonder Man is in the early stages, but if things crackle, cameras could be rolling in 2023.

We knew, as per the trade report, that Cretton was going to be more involved in the MCU with his overall deal. There is a rumored Ten Rings show coming also, and of course there will be a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. I did not expect to see Wonder Man, but, here we go.

Wonder Man has your usual set of enhanced abilities, strength, speed, agility, reflexes, etc. However perhaps where Wonder Man, aka Simon Williams stood apart was that he was a Hollywood stunt man in his day job. The character began as a villain and later changed into a hero by the time the ’70’s came about. Interestingly, Wonder Man also had some ties to both Vision and Scarlet Witch. There was a connection between Williams and Vision and he even ended up falling for Wanda after Vision was destroyed.

Marvel does not always follow the comics anything more than as a base guide for ideas. Therefore we have no idea what the Simon Williams of the MCU would be like. I guess we will find out soon enough, maybe even late 2024?
