Marvel Rumor: Are the Studio Already Making Plans For The Defenders Characters?

When Daredevil was canceled on Netflix in 2018, we knew it was the end for all Marvel characters on that streaming platform. Jessica Jones Season 3 was the last to show, but we knew it was cancelled long before they officially announced it. These characters however, were popular, especially Daredevil and Punisher, and I especially thought each Season of Daredevil was top quality TV. So since the cancellation, fans have been wondering if and when Disney might use these characters within the MCU going forward?

Today we have a rumor from MCU Cosmic that plans are already underway to use the characters of Punisher and Daredevil at the least. The scoop site does say that this is merely a rumor they have heard, so we are not saying this is a solid leak or anything, but it would make a lot of sense for things to be beginning around now.

We do know that all the characters who appeared on Netflix are under an exclusivity deal which means they cannot appear anywhere but Netflix for two years after cancellation. The outlet wonders whether this has changed if Marvel is developing something now. However, I don’t think that’s necessary, it would be perfectly acceptable for Marvel to make whatever they wished with these characters before the end of the two year exclusivity period, they just wouldn’t be able to show them anywhere. Daredevil was canceled in 2018, which means Disney would be within their rights to have a Daredevil show on Disney + by the end of this year, and that would mean beginning to develop it now.

We also remain unsure as to how Punisher fit into that exclusivity deal as Punisher was originally not part of the deal for the likes of the actual Defenders. We assume they had a similar deal in place for Punisher, but no one has given any solid answer on this yet. It seems likely that Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage would be less on Disney’s character priority list given the lukewarm reception to those shows was one of the major reasons the Netflix portion of the MCU failed to lift off, polar opposite to how Daredevil and Punisher shows were received by the audience.

The point is, whilst it doesn’t clarify this rumor, or give it any validity, we can say that legally Marvel can make a Daredevil show all they like as long as it does not hit any platform until probably December this year. Whether they are or not, depends on how accurate this scoop is, and if you read up on scoops, you know it’s a hit and miss game at the best of times. Even if information comes from genuine sources, plans do change internally and some good stories can often fail to pan out, especially if it’s related to something which hasn’t officially begun yet.

If I had to guess, and I will, I would say Marvel wouldn’t be daft enough to not be aware how popular this version of Daredevil was, and whilst a Daredevil show on Disney + might need to be toned down, there are other avenues such as Hulu that could maintain the more adult feel to this corner of the MCU. Not only that, but Vincent D’Onofrio is in my opinion second only to Thanos as the best villain of the MCU so far. Marvel Studios would be crazy to not build this character up and use him in the MCU for a while longer.

That doesn’t mean it will happen though, so on that front, we shall just have to wait and see if this rumor pans out, and whether this would be a reboot (horrible idea) or bringing back those same actors for new stories. Tell us what you think of this rumor, do you hope it pans out, would you like to see Daredevil come back to the MCU? Tell us what you got in the usual spot.
