Marvel Says The World Is Ready For Gay Superheroes

In the immortal words of the great Bob Dylan, the times they are a changing… More producers of entertainment are depicting accurate portrayals of the world we currently live in. People might be realizing that many of the consumers of entertainment are underrepresented in media. Marvel certainly took notice with Black Panther and Captain Marvel. Prior to Black Panther, African Americans only onscreen superheroes were Meteor Man, Blank Man, Blade, Spawn, and Hancock. Marvel’s recent investment into this segment of the population paid off. The film smashed records and earned Marvel an Oscar for Best Original Music Score, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design.

If the early reviews and the fact that Rotten Tomatoes has recently certified Captain Marvel fresh are any indication, Marvel might be looking towards the Academy Awards again next year. Heck, just on the digital effects front alone the films trailers showcase a Nick Fury who has gotten the upgraded Benjamin Button treatment. Plus, how many female-led superhero films have we had? Not a lot.

According to Marvel, more changes are coming. The world may, in fact, be ready for their first gay superhero. Marvel’s production chief Victoria Alonso recently commented to Variety on the subject “The world is ready, the world is ready,” Alonso went on to further elaborate on the subject saying “I’m so passionate about this I’ve got to tell you. Our entire success is based on people that are incredibly different. Why wouldn’t we? Why would we only want to be recognized by only one type of person? Our audience is global, is diverse, is inclusive. If we don’t do it that way for them, we will fail. If we don’t put pedal to the metal on the diversity and the inclusivity, we will not have continued success. Our determination is to have that for all of the people out there watching our movies.”

Very exciting times to be alive. Who do you want to see represented next on the big screen? What LGBT character do you think will be first for Marvel? Will it be a rumored lead in Marvel’s upcoming Eternals film?
