Marvel Comics is continuing to build excitement for one of the most anticipated comic book releases of the year by revealing a fresh wave of variant covers for Amazing Spider-Man #1000.
Arriving in comic shops on September 16, the milestone issue celebrates a historic achievement for Marvel’s flagship Spider-Man series while delivering a pivotal chapter in writer Joe Kelly’s current run. Along with advancing Peter Parker’s latest adventures, the oversized issue will feature multiple anniversary stories honoring more than six decades of Spider-Man history.
One of the biggest talking points surrounding the release has been its unique approach to the main covers. Rather than a single standard cover, Amazing Spider-Man #1000 will feature two primary covers from the title’s lead artists.
Legendary Spider-Man artist John Romita Jr. joins acclaimed illustrator Paolo Rivera for a painted collaboration that celebrates the character’s legacy, while current series artist Pepe Larraz provides a second main cover showcasing his dynamic take on Marvel’s iconic wall-crawler. Marvel previously unveiled Larraz’s cover, with Romita Jr.’s solo variant expected to be revealed next week.
Editor Nick Lowe addressed fan reactions to the dual-cover announcement, explaining that the decision was designed to emphasize the significance of the issue while bringing together some of Spider-Man’s most celebrated artistic talent.
“Our goal is to bring as many legendary Spider-Man artists together for this monumental celebration,” Lowe said.
For Romita Jr., contributing to another major Spider-Man milestone carries special meaning.
“I’m honored to work on yet another milestone issue for Spidey,” Romita Jr. said. “I hope everyone enjoys the issue, it’s going to be unforgettable.”
Larraz echoed that excitement, reflecting on what it means to illustrate the 1,000th issue of the comic that inspired him as a child.
“Thank you, Marvel, for the honor and privilege of making me a part of Peter Parker’s history with this milestone issue,” Larraz said.
Beyond its two primary covers, Amazing Spider-Man #1000 will feature an impressive lineup of variant covers from some of the comic industry’s biggest names. Newly revealed artwork includes a foil variant by Ed McGuinness paying tribute to John Romita Sr.’s iconic Amazing Spider-Man #100 cover, a new cover from Skottie Young, a stylish piece by J. Scott Campbell, a Ravage-focused cover by Ryan Stegman, and the final installment of Lee Bermejo’s acclaimed Amazing Visions cover series.

Marvel also revealed a variant by Giuseppe Camuncoli highlighting one of the issue’s special anniversary stories, “Of Webs and Six-Guns.” The story is written by comic book legend Larry Lieber, whose early work alongside Stan Lee and Steve Ditko helped establish Spider-Man and the Marvel Universe during the Silver Age of comics.
Fans can also look forward to two additional themed variants, including a Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls cover spotlighting Peni Parker from the upcoming video game and a Marvel Animation variant inspired by the beloved 1967 Spider-Man animated series.
With anniversary stories, an all-star creative lineup, and an expansive collection of collectible covers, Amazing Spider-Man #1000 is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s biggest comic book events of the year. As September approaches, Marvel has teased that even more story details, creative talent announcements, and cover reveals are still on the way.
