Marvel’s Blade Movie Now Expected To Be Lower Budget After Script Issues

Despite its absence from Bob Iger's earnings statement, no, Blade is not cancelled or delayed again, at least not yet.

In a new report it is claimed that Marvel’s Blade movie is now expected to be lower budget following some disastrous script issues. It is not new information that Blade is currently being rewritten. However, a new report from Variety details how bad the old scripts were. The trade then goes on to say the new version of Blade may have a budget under $100M.

‘As public criticism mounts, Feige is pulling the plug on scripts and projects that aren’t working. Case in point: the “Blade” reboot. With Mahershala Ali signed on for the eponymous role of a vampire, things looked promising for a 2023 release date. But the project has gone through at least five writers, two directors and one shutdown six weeks before production. One person familiar with the script permutations says the story at one point morphed into a narrative led by women and filled with life lessons. Blade was relegated to the fourth lead, a bizarre idea considering that the studio had two-time Oscar winner Ali on board.’

‘Amid reports that Ali was ready to exit over script issues, Feige went back to the drawing board and hired Michael Green, the Oscar-nominated writer of “Logan,” to start anew. Speculation around town is that the studio is looking to make the film, now slated for 2025, on a budget of less than $100 million — a deviation from Marvel’s big-spending strategy.’

Wait, I thought Nic Pizzolato of True Detective was rewriting Blade? Now the trade says it’s Michael Green? Color me confused by that one. The rumor in the Barside Buzz related article above is just a rumor. But that part appears to be correct. That Blade was getting a page 1 rewrite. The information about Pizzolato however,  originally came from more reputable sources as I recall?

Outside of that, no wonder the script needed overhauled and Ali was unhappy. A Blade film should star Blade, it’s not really any more complicated than that. As for the lower budget, I think we’re just going to have to get used to that for new additions to the MCU. The movies have to make a profit and perhaps having lower budgets will force them to write better stories?

What do you think of the news? Marvel’s Blade movie is now expected to be lower budget following some disastrous script issues. Thoughts below as always.
