The box office is getting harder and harder to gauge with every blockbuster that hits. History is no help because records are constantly being smashed with odd release dates and in genres that used to not do so hot. Speaking of records, some are beaten within a few months of being set! This was the case when Spider-Man: Far From Home broke the Tuesday record set by The Force Awakens by $2 million. $2 million may seem like a drop in the bucket when a film makes hundreds of millions, but that’s a lot of money on a non-holiday Tuesday.
This chaos in projections has resulted in Far From Home bringing in more money for its first week and weekend than initially expected, just as Avengers: Endgame did. The second solo outing for Spidey is expected to end the weekend with more than $185 million in domestic gross since it’s Tuesday opening. It’s estimated the three-day weekend take will top $93 million too. This beats the numbers we reported on yesterday by $10-15 million, and likely puts the film on track to top $250 million by the end of its second weekend with a 50-60% drop week to week. This film has a good chance at the $400 million mark if word of mouth continues to be so good and with a 96% verified audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, that seems likely. Also, I have a feeling this film will end up with an A from CinemaScore which can help in its mission to be the top-grossing Web-Head movie.

Far From Home wasn’t the only film to make money for the house Tony Stark built, Endgame is still chugging along after being “re-released” last week. It has brought in an additional $3 million in the domestic box office and benefited from a re-release in India as well. The film is now sitting at $2.772 billion worldwide. It is now $15,502,254 away from the all-time record held by Avatar. Well, $15,502,255 in order to beat the record. How funny would that be? Beating it by $1!
Look, I want this film to beat the record as much as anyone else that realizes Avatar wasn’t that great of a movie, but Endgame hits digital in 23 days, and at that point why would you go to the theaters to see it again?
