Matt Reeves Says The Batman Will Not Use Batman: Year One As A Starting Point, Plays Coy About Affleck’s Involvement

We’ve all heard a lot about Matt Reeves’ The Batman, wait that’s not right, actually, we haven’t heard much at all, at least not a lot that is concrete. Fans still aren’t 100 percent sure who will be playing the Bat in the film. Not long ago we heard a rumor that the film will use Batman: Year One as a basis for the film, it turns out that won’t be the case as Matt Reeves spoke to reporters after a panel promoting his upcoming series The Passage, and debunked the Year One rumor, which was actually speculation from a rumor that came out earlier this year.

“We’re not doing any particular (comic). Year One is one of the many comic books that I love. We are definitely not doing Year One. It’s just exciting to be focused very specifically on a tale that is defining for him and very personal to him. Obviously we’re not doing an origin tale or anything like that. We’re doing a story that is definitively Batman though and trying to tell a story that’s emotional and yet is really about him being the world’s greatest detective and all the things that for me, since I was a kid, made me love Batman.”

Reeves continued saying the first draft of the script is still being worked on, but may be finished soon.

“We are working on getting our draft [in] the next couple weeks. Right now, my head is totally into the script. Right now, I’m going to be leaving here to go back to work on the script. What we’ve talked about is hopefully in the spring or early summer, something like that,”

Reeves also said he has spoken with Affleck, but wouldn’t confirm Affleck’s involvement in the film. He did say that his film will in some way connect to the larger DC universe, but of course, didn’t want to be too revealing.

“There are ways in which all of this connects to DC, to the DC universe as well. We’re one piece of many pieces so I don’t want to comment on that except to say that I’m focused very specifically on this aspect of the DC world.”

So there you have it, The Batman is moving forward, albeit, at a very slow pace, but hopefully it will pay off. Hopefully, it won’t be long before we get confirmation one way or the other on who’s playing Batman, is Affleck in or out?
