What Happened To Harry Potter’s Lucius Malfoy? Jason Isaacs Doesn’t Think It’s Great

Lucius Malfoy is a dark and depressing character within the Harry Potter mythology. He’s racist, hateful, self-serving. He served under the Voldemort when it suited him, but when it became clear the Dark Lord no longer held them in high regard, he turned tail and ran. At the end of the Battle of Hogwarts, he and his family were fully reformed and on the winning side of the war. However, even during celebrations, it was clear he didn’t seem to fit in.

“Onscreen, you can see he’s always slightly stubbly and red-eyed and drinking whenever he can,” Jason Isaacs, who portrayed the character in the film adaptations, told Syfy Wire. “I always thought he drank too much. And then, in the final battle at Hogwarts, it became clear to him, particularly when Narcissa and Draco ran off, that there was no place for him in either future. Voldemort was not gonna have him by his side. He’d already [taken] my wand at the table in Malfoy Manor, which is public humiliation, almost castration.”

When all said and done, we know that he and his family never served any time in Azkaban. They had defected at just the right moment. If you’ve read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, you know that he has a grandchild named Scorpius, but few other details are given about what his life was like following the end of the Harry Potter series.

Jason Isaacs threw in his two cents on the subject.

“I think what would’ve happened afterwards, is that he would become a shell of himself,” Isaacs told  the outlet. “His money would protect him because money always protects people, and I think he would’ve lost — if he ever had any — the respect of his wife and his son. Society would shun him and he would cower inside his mansion and drink himself into an early grave. And frankly, deserve it.”

Of course, you shouldn’t take this as gospel. While he did play the character, the canon is ultimately in the hands of J.K. Rowling. That being said, I don’t see this as too far from the truth. Draco Malfoy’s personality in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child seemed to imply someone forced to live with deep stigma. Given that his father was the worst perpetrator, I imagine his public shaming was much worse.
