Matt Reeves’ The Batman Is Reportedly Going Full Sherlock Holmes

With all the casting news regarding Matt Reeves’ The Batman, you know it’s only a matter of time before we start hearing some legitimate story confirmations. All signs have been pointing to this being a detective-focused Batman tale — one that features an active rogues’ gallery of villains — and this latest piece of news pretty much confirms as such, even if it isn’t yet official.

Thomas Polito, senior editor at The GWW, took to Twitter to give a few minor details regarding the film. He drove home not only the detective angle, but that Reeves was genuinely going for a Sherlock Holmes-like structure in the story.

“Small The Batman update: I hear the movie is gonna play out very much like a Sherlock Holmes story with Catwoman as Batman’s Irene Adler, [Gordon as his Watson] & Riddler as his Moriarty. Reeves is also building a world similar to the animated shows & comics where all the villains are already out there.”

So, not only is the film going to play out like a great mystery, but it will feature a lot of the structural milestones and tropes of your typical Arthur Conan Doyle-starring story.

This pretty much falls in line with everything else we’ve heard about the film before, and this greater emphasis on all the typical tropes mystery-lovers have been enjoying for decades could only mean a further diversification of what audiences expect from superhero films.

What do you think of this? Are you happy that they’re leaning into classic mystery tropes, or does it concern you? Let us know your thoughts down below!
