Filmmaker and director of X-Men: First Class Matthew Vaughn thinks Deadpool 3 will ‘save’ the MCU, is he right? As we know the MCU has fallen quite far from its Avengers: Endgame pedestal. Next year will see only one MCU movie released for the first time since Phase 1, that movie is Deadpool 3. Or, Deadpool Vs Wolverine, or whatever they end up decided to call it?
Speaking with BroBible recently to promote his new movie Argylle, Vaughn says he thinks Deadpool 3 will save the MCU. No, Vaughn hasn’t seen the movie because it’s just wrapped filming and he wasn’t involved in making it. However, there’s a good chance he’s heard a little more than you or I about what to expect from the film. Also, to be fair, rumors wise the film is already pretty hyped by the fanbase.
“The few snippets that I know about Deadpool vs. Wolverine — or Wolverine vs. Deadpool, I’m sure that argument between Ryan and Hugh is happening as we speak — are unbelievable. That’s going to be the jolt… the Marvel universe is about to have a jolt of them and it’s going to bring that body back to life… I think Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are about to save the whole Marvel universe. I’m a genuine fan of the X-Men, all I want is for the movies to be as good as they should be.”
is Vaughn right? Well, I’m not Nostradamus, or even Professor X, so who can say for certain? However, I have a feeling Vaughn may be only partially right. Reynolds and Jackman together as Deadpool and Wolverine, with almost no limitations on what other characters they can use. That’s something Marvel fans have dreamed of since the awful Wolverine: Origins movie.

Add this to rumors of the TVA, Multiversal hopping and fighting of variants across the full Fox movies catalogue. Yes, this is going to make money, maybe it’ll be the biggest movie of 2024 even.
However, for me, Deadpool is a bit separated from the current MCU still. That will change, but what I’m saying is, the ‘current events’ within the timeline has to get better, both in film and on TV. If Deadpool 3 makes bank but then Captain America: Brave New World is a flop, as is Thunderbolts or Fantastic Four, then no, Deadpool 3 didn’t save the MCU. The MCU has to save itself one movie or show at a time.
So far since the low point of Secret Invasion and The Marvels, there has been an uptick in quality. The Marvels wasn’t even that bad, but it featured characters born within average shows or films. Ergo, nobody cared enough to give it a try. If this uptick in quality continues, then maybe the MCU can be saved. If not, it’ll become something just for the Marvel geeks where previously it transcended those boundaries.
What do you think of his comments as Matthew Vaughn thinks Deadpool 3 will ‘save’ the MCU, is he right? Or, like I said is this a case of one movie or show at a time and pushing for quality over quantity? Thoughts below as usual.
