To Petr Jákl, Jan Žižka is one of the greatest warriors in the Czech Republic and perhaps the entire world.
The national hero, also nicknamed “One-Eyed Žižka,” never lost a battle as Jákl wanted to show his story on the screen with Medieval starring Ben Foster.
The film also stars Sophie Lowe, Til Schweiger, Matthew Goode, and Michael Caine.

Ben Foster (Hell or High Water) and Michael Caine (The Cider House Rules) star in the action-packed historical epic inspired by the true story of daring mercenary leader Jan Žižka, one of the great warriors in history. After the death of its emperor, the Holy Roman Empire plummets into chaos while corrupt kings battle for control of the empty throne. To battle the tyranny and greed of those clawing for power, Jan must lead a rebel army in this sweeping saga of war and betrayal.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta chatted with director and writer Petr Jákl about the film’s genesis and production. We talked about his local hero, using his country’s glorious landscapes and castles and the realism of medieval violence depiction.
Petr Jákl started his career in sports, in which he became a judo champion of the Czech Republic multiple times. He represented his country in the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000. Also, he was active in the film industry as an actor and stuntman. He was in the big productions of Luc Besson’s Joan of Arc and Rob Cohen’s xXx. Eventually, he became a director and producer making Kajínek his debut film marked as the highest-grossing Czech thriller in history. Later, he directed the horror movie Ghoul, which became the highest-grossing Czech film in the horror genre.
Medieval releases digitally today. It will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on December 6.
