Mel Gibson To Direct And Star In Lethal Weapon 5

As reported by Variety, Mel Gibson to direct and star in Lethal Weapon 5. Lethal Weapon 4 released back in 1998. That’s 23 years for the mathematically challenged out there. That’s a hell of a long time between installments. But there has been rumblings about Lethal Weapon 5 for some time. Though, after the death of Richard Donner, it seemed the fifth movie might never happen.

The Sun caught up with Gibson at an event in London. The star let slip he would be stepping into the directors chair.

“He [Donner] was developing the screenplay and he got pretty far along with it. And he said to me one day, ‘Listen kid, if I kick the bucket, you will do it.’ And I said: ‘Shut up,’” Gibson said according to The Sun, which covered the event. “He did indeed pass away, but he did ask me to do it, and, at the time, I didn’t say anything. He said it to his wife and to the studio and the producer. So, I will be directing the fifth one.”

As reported by Variety.

Donner’s wife, Lauren Schuler Donner, will produce the film, alongside Rideback’s Dan Lin. Jonathan Eirich of Rideback and Derek Hoffman of The Donners’ Company will executive produce.

Currently it us unknown whether Danny Glover will reprise his role as Roger Murtaugh. However, one would imagine Glover will return and the actor has certainly read the script as covered in the related link above. One would again assume that Glover read the script because he’s in it. As I said in that article my only request for Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon 5 needs to be him finally being retired. After all, Murtaugh was almost ready to retire back in the first movie in 1987.

To be fair, by this point Riggs would have also long retired and the pair would be out fishing most weekends. So I just don’t want to see the two in the same riles they were 23 years ago. It’ll be even more than 23 years by the time the movie gets made and then released. Is it just too late now?
