Metal Gear Solid Creator Hideo Kojima Likes This Unexpected Actor For Live-Action Solid Snake

There was a time when I rallied for Kiefer Sutherland to take on the role of Solid Snake in a Metal Gear Solid movie. This was long before he donned the gravelly voice in Phantom Pain; around the early to mid-2000s or so. Of course, way too much time has passed for him to play Solid Snake in a standard Metal Gear Solid movie these days, and to be honest, I’m at a loss for who could take on the character in a live-action film.

Luckily, video game creator Hideo Kojima is more than aware of the current landscape of films and TV shows. As such, you can always count on him to give a well-informed answer to some cinematic question. If you follow him on social media, he always talks about his love of the craft, and he recently answered a question about a certain actor who’s caught his attention.

“There are many actors that I follow,” Kojima wrote. “Luca Marinelli recently caught my eye after watching The Old Guard and Martin Eden. He played an impressive villain in They Call Me Jeeg Robot, but I think that he will break out soon, and his popularity will increase. Also, I think if he donned a bandana, he’d be a spitting image of Solid Snake!”

I actually haven’t had a chance to check out those films yet, but they’ve piqued my interest. Based on what I’ve seen from interviews of Marinelli, I’m not sure how I feel, but I’m willing to take a look at what he’s done before I jump to any conclusions. I’m mainly worried about the character’s raspy voice.

As much as I loved David Hayter, after getting older, I realized just how unnatural his rasp sounded. It’s one of the reasons I was actually okay with Sutherland replacing him for Phantom Pain. A more natural rasp is a must for me in terms of a live-action version. Reservations aside, I actually have immense faith in director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. He may not have directed much, but based on what he has directed and interviews with him, it’s clear he has a solid understanding of what fans like to see.
