Metal Gear Solid Film Director Wants Animated Series With Original Solid Snake Voice Actor

Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid series has had an undeniable impact on the video game industry. For many of us, it was the first real cinematic experience we had in a video game. Sure, there were others like Final Fantasy VI that dabbled in the epic scope of a story, but Metal Gear Solid legitimately used cinematic filmmaking techniques. Solid Snake himself may not have had a face to speak of, but that didn’t keep his personality and struggles from spilling onto the audience as a film character’s would. And Metal Gear has only gotten more cinematic as time has gone on. Because of the franchise’s cinematic nature, you’d think it’d be relatively easy to adapt for the big screen.

Not necessarily.

“I’ve been on that movie for six years and I’ve been fighting every single day to make sure that we translate that movie properly,” director Jordan Vogt-Roberts said on Gary Whitta’s Animal Talking show.

“This is my baby,” he continued. “I’ve been working on this thing for six years, trying to make it so it is the disruptive, punk-rock, true to Metal Gear, true to Kojima-san spirit version of what this is and I will continue to fight for it every day.”

It’s at this time, it is worth adding that as cinematic as Metal Gear Solid is…it’s also weird. As far as I can tell, Vogt-Roberts is fighting hard to retain the weirder aspects of the franchise that may not necessarily translate to a Hollywood film.

“It’s a difficult thing,” Vogt-Roberts continued. “Getting any movie made in Hollywood is hard. Getting something like Metal Gear made where it is so complex is even harder. That’s why I’m trying to make it for a budget where you can do crazy shit, where you can do the Metal Gear version of it, where it isn’t neutered.”

But in addition to the film, Vogt-Roberts also has his eyes set on an animated series.

“[I’m] trying to get an animated series going that brings back David Hayter, that brings back the original voice cast, and doing that in tandem [with the MGS movie].”

Die-hard Metal Gear Solid fans will be happy to hear that. Hayter was the voice of Solid Snake for many years. Kiefer Sutherland replaced Hayter in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. Not for nothing, but I personally think Sutherland fits the character well. He had a more natural gravelly voice that I thought worked. But I have to be honest. Fans LOVE David Hayter.
