Michael B. Jordan On Why Killmonger’s Costume Resembled Vegeta’s, Collaborates With Coach On Naruto-Inspired Clothing Line

What do you call a Vegeta Killmonger fusion? Vegemonger? Killgeta? The world may never know. What we do know is that Michael B. Jordan is aware of the resemblance between the costume Killmonger donned in Marvel’s Black Panther and that of the Saiyan military outfit worn by Vegeta in the anime and manga series Dragon Ball Z.

Ever since his costume revealed, fans suspected this intentional, as Jordan is a proud anime fan. Recently, Jordan did an interview with lifestyle and fashion magazine High Snobiety, during which Jordan commented on the creation of his nefarious Killmonger’s costume.

“I can’t remember if me and Ryan [Coogler, director of Black Panther] talked about it. I’m not sure if that was intentional. I thought it was dope — even a happy coincidence. I thought it was fly that people saw that and actually turned it into [memes].”

Jordan, apparently, is a big enough fan of anime that London-based fashion house Coach bestowed the chance to Jordan to design a capsule collection. Coach director Stuart Vevers collaborated with Jordan, working so closely that the two informed each other on their respective geek passions. For Jordan, it was anime. While Vevers gave Jordan the ins and outs of fashion design. The effect of the two worlds intersecting was commented on in the article by Viz Media’s Alex Lee who says of Jordan’s love for anime:

“He’s not shy about it. He wears it out front. He did a Coach collab and that completely validated anime for us. It makes people not want to keep it in their room; it makes them want to blurt it out and be proud.”

But that wasn’t the end of Jordan’s love affair and collaboration with anime-related properties. Manga publisher Viz Media has just revealed that Jordan is working with Coach once again to bring a line of wear inspired by the manga Naruto.

“Working with Mike is always a great experience,” said Vevers. “He’s a great collaborator because he always puts his heart and soul into everything he does, and because he brought something authentic and personal to the collection.”

“With my name on this collection, it was important to design pieces that represent my cultural influences and my community; pieces that I could see my friends, family and fans wearing with pride,” said Jordan. “As with all aspects of my work, this collection is about bringing fresh perspectives and unique voices to the forefront. Expanding into the fashion design space was rewarding beyond my expectations. I’m grateful to Stuart and Coach for providing me with the opportunity and expertise to execute a collection I’m extremely proud of.”

You can check out that new collection HERE at their site! Also, if you’re attending New York Comic Con, they should have some stuff on display.
