Milly Alcock Was Gunn’s Early Choice For Supergirl Plus Matthew Vaughn Would Direct Woman Of Tomorrow

Filmmaker Craig Gillespie is in talks to direct Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow for the new DCU.

After the news broke already it seems Milly Alcock was James Gunn’s early choice for Supergirl, plus Matthew Vaughn would direct Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Let’s start with James Gunn who effectively confirmed Milly Alcock as Supergirl after all the trades ran the story anyway. However, Gunn also says he first saw Alcock in House of the Dragon and immediately suggested her name to co-boss of DCU Peter Saffran. In other words, the first actress he thought of ended up getting the part.

Here is what Gunn had to say on Threads.

“In case you missed this exciting news yesterday. Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics. I was watching House of the Dragon & thought she might have the edge, grace & authenticity we needed for the DCU’s Supergirl. And now here we are. Life is wild sometimes.”

It is still not known whether Alcock will make her DCU debut within Superman: Legacy, or some other project prior to her own movie. Though, I’ll guess at the former strongly, even if a minor role. As for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, we have ne director who is up for helming the picture. Matthew Vaughn who is currently promoting his new movie Argylle told BroBible he’s keen to direct Alcock in the movie if he gets the shout. Vaughn is a self confessed Superman nut and has tried to make a Supes film previously. He was asked whether he’s be up for Supergirl?

“It’s funny you say that, I’m a huge fan of Milly Alcock. Huge fan. Met with her for this other project we’re working on — she turned me down, which was sad. She’s a fabulous actress. Then again, I do find it very weird that they haven’t got a director. That surprised me, because you shouldn’t cast a movie — the director should be casting the movie. I don’t understand who cast it if there isn’t a director.”

As said above, I think the reason Alcock was cast prior to a director is because she will first appear in Superman: Legacy which Gunn is directing. I doubt Vaughn is aware of that given it’s not official. When pressed though he said given that it is Alcock, he’d still be keen.

“No [I’m not pleading the fifth]. I was asked about doing The Flash way back, but I said I’d only do it if I could recast — if I’m directing my own superhero film, I want my own, new superhero. But, Milly Alcock, I probably would have put forward for it if I was directing… so I haven’t considered it. Never say never. I’m a big fan of James Gunn and Peter Safran, so yeah, I would consider it.”

I like Vaughn, would like to see him get a shot as something X-Men related when Marvel gets there. Unsure if he’d be a great choice for Supergirl, because I’m unsure what to expect from Woman of Tomorrow. I never really read Supergirl comics, so it’s hard for me to gauge how it should feel.

What do you think of the news Milly Alcock was James Gunn’s early choice for Supergirl? Matthew Vaughn would direct Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, would he be a good choice or not? Thoughts below as always.
