Monica | Trace Lysette and Andrea Pallaoro on Emotional Trans Story

Trace Lysette in Monica

For Mother’s Day, every parent has high expectations for their children. What if an estranged child needs to reconnect after drastic changes in her life? In Monica, the film tells a story about re-connection, self-discovery, and acceptance as a woman returns home after abandonment from her mother.

The film stars Trace Lysette (Hustlers, Transparant), Patricia Clarkson (The Station Agent, Far from Heaven), Adriana Barraza (Babel, Drag Me to Hell), Emily Browning (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Sleeping Beauty), and Joshua Close (Fargo, In Their Skin). Andrea Pallaoro directed the film from the screenplay by Pallaoro and Orlando Tirado.

Here is the official synopsis:

Monica is an intimate portrait of a woman who returns home after a long absence to confront the wounds of her past. Reconnecting with her mother (Patricia Clarkson) and the rest of her family for the first time since leaving as a teenager, Monica (Trace Lysette) embarks on a path of healing and acceptance. The film delves into Monica’s internal world and state of mind, her pain and fears, her needs and desires, to explore universal themes of abandonment and forgiveness.
