The first 10 minutes of the new Mortal Kombat film tell show the reason for the rivalry between two of the franchise’s core characters, Sub-Zero and Scorpion.  The opening of the movie is said to depict a brutal fight between the two ninjas before they each gained their supernatural abilities. Director Simon McQuoid recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the beginning of he film. You can check out what he had to say below

“[The history of Bi-Han and Hanzo] needed to be told within the fight. There are some great camera moves to give it a bit of dynamism, that make it really enjoyable. We needed it to be really elemental and really brutal. It’s not a shiny film… I wanted the dirt and the grime to come through.”

More From McQuoid:

“[Hanzo’s] the leader of a ninja clan and he’s strong, but also… at the beginning, he’s a peaceful family man. It is like a family drama with excitingly brutal fighting. That’s the image of this movie for me,” he adds.

While I have other characters I enjoy, Sub-Zero and Scorpion have always been the franchise to me. Yes, I know Liu Kang is the hero, and many others factor into the lore (and what is probably the most winding and twisted canon of any franchise) but, I’ve always been partial to the ninjas.

Being a longtime fan of the franchise and taking into account the recently released photos (which you can check out by clicking the RELATED section above), and everything I’ve read, I am feeling really good about this film. The YouTube Series Mortal Kombat: Legacy did a lo to erase the awful big screen adaptations of the 1990s, but I think the upcoming film will truly be the franchised much deserved redemption.
