NBC has begun development on a series based on the 2009 book Save The Deli, written by David Sax. The series is being adapted by writer Lauren Bachelis and produced by Bachelis, Milo Ventimiglia (This Is Us) and Russ Cundiff. Cundiff’s DiVide Pictures and 20th Century Fox TV are the studios backing the production.
Deadline explains the series as follows:
“... Save the Deli is a family workplace comedy centering on a 30-year-old woman, who much to the shock of her family, friends and mostly herself, becomes the new owner of her Chicago family deli after her grandfather dies. Naturally, her very opinionated staff and family members make the job unbearable since they all have conflicting ideas of how to save the deli.”

Bachelis will combine the book’s overall story with her own personal experiences. Her grandfather once owned the Jewish deli Mort’s in Tarzana. Her TV writing credits include Single By 30, Sing It!, The Haunted Hathaways and most recently produced the Netflix series Club De Cuervos.
Ventimiglia is a two-time Emmy nominee for lead actor for his work on This Is Us and has executive produced multiple projects. This will be DiVide Pictures’ second deal with NBC; the first project has yet to be produced. The premiere date for Save The Deli has yet to be determined.
