NBC Picks Up Pilot For Robert Langdon Series

The Da Vinci Code

Angels & Demons

Harvard Religious Iconology and Symbology Professor Robert Langdon will be experiencing his next great complex mystery on the small screen.

NBC has decided to go forward with Langdon, a television adaptation of author Dan Brown’s popular literary character-turned-cinematic hero. The network handed down a formal pilot order for the project on Wednesday. Brown will act as executive producer on the project along with filmmaker Ron Howard, who helmed the director’s chair for The Da Vinci CodeAngels & Demons, and Inferno. Rounding out the executive producing squad is Brian Grazer, Anna Culp, and Samie Falvey. Writing duo Dan Dworkin and Jay Beattie (MTV’s Scream, ABC’s Revenge, NBC’s The Event) will be plotting out the script.

The Hollywood Reporter, which reported the news on Wednesday afternoon, states that the series “revolves around the early adventures of the famed Harvard symbologist who must solve a series of deadly puzzles to save his kidnapped mentor and thwart a global conspiracy.” The article makes reference to the novel The Lost Symbol, which focuses on a mystery intertwined within the rituals of the Freemasons. While the novel takes place after the events of Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code, the series looks to make it Langdon’s first puzzle-filled adventure.

While I have experienced the trilogy of Langdon films, The Lost Symbol was the first Langdon novel I ever read—followed by Inferno. I enjoyed the book and was disappointed that it was not selected as the third cinematic adaptation, for fear that it would never be adapted. It looks like NBC has resolved that issue, creating instead an episodic adventure for the professor.

No word yet as to when the production will begin.
