Netflix Adapting One Hundred Years Of Solitude Into Spanish-Language Original Series

The father of magical realism is about to have one of his seminal works adapted for the small screen, and it’s about damn time. I’m talking about Gabriel García Márquez and his novel One Hundred Years of Solitude. According to a new report from THR, the Nobel Prize-winning novel is being turned into an original series on Netflix.

“For decades our father was reluctant to sell the film rights to Cien Años de Soledad,” the author’s son Rodrigo García said in a statement, “because he believed that it could not be made under the time constraints of a feature film, or that producing it in a language other than Spanish would not do it justice.”

You read that right. This series will be produced in its native language of Spanish and will be shot in Colombia. This right here is one reason I love the current globalized era we live in. Though the power of streaming services, we can experience quality content from around the world in their native languages, and it’s really breaking down borders in terms of the way different cultures tackle similar genres as we do.

Francisco Ramos, VP Spanish language originals for Netflix, added: “We are incredibly honored to be entrusted with the first filmed adaptation of One Hundred Years of Solitude, a timeless and iconic story from Latin America that we are thrilled to share with the world.”

The show will be executive produced by Rodrigo García and Gonzalo García Barcha.

Now, if you’ll excuse me. I have to dig up my old copy of the book and get back to it.
