Netflix Adds Almost 16 Million Subscribers In The Last Three Months

Netflix has something for everyone. Whether it’s binge-watching your favorite episodes of The Office, catching up on Ozark or watching something as crazy as Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. Especially now that a lot of places around the world have stay-at-home orders.

The unfortunate situation we find ourselves in has boosted Netflix to a strong first three months of 2020 according to The Hollywood Reporter. The company announced that it had added 15.8 million subscribers during the first quarter. This is a period of record growth that has lifted its global base to about 183 million. Netflix had projected to add 7 million subscribers during that period. But this was forecast before the full effects of the ever-changing pandemic.

Despite these numbers CEO Reed Hastings said that “in our 20+ year history, we have never seen a future more uncertain or unsettling. The coronavirus has reached every corner of the world, and, in the absence of a widespread treatment or vaccine, no one knows how or when this terrible crisis will end.”

He then talked about the fact that Netflix was forecasting to add 7.5 million subscribers during the second quarter. Also that this higher viewing and increased membership was only temporary. That it would decline as soon as places around the world begin to get back to normal.

Netflix projects that 64 million viewers choose to watch shows during their first four weeks of availability. During the first quarter, breakout Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness has been huge for them. Netflix content chief commented that the documentary, “turned out to be an unbelievably well-timed distraction.” Also the Spanish drama Money Heist has been a big draw with 65 million member accounts expected to watch the series.

One area where they have been negatively impacted like other studios is its production of upcoming projects. Most of their filming is on hold. But they are continuing production on their animated projects through work-from-home setups. Also that more than 200 projects are already in postproduction.

Second-quarter content slate will not be impacted by the pandemic. Some of the only shows that will be affected are those that needed to be dubbed. The fourth season of The Crown and the animated film Over the Moon have been shot and are in postproduction.

I have found myself a lot on Netflix as I am a fan of The Office as well as House of Cards. Netflix is one of those streaming services that you either have or are “borrowing” from someone else. A lot of forms of entertainment, including sports, not available at the moment. So we must continue to count on Netflix.
