Netflix ‘Doubling Down’ On Interactive Series After Bandersnatch Success

Netflix has always been working hard to innovate on narrative content. Back when they launched their first original shows, they pioneered the now-common method of dropping entire seasons of a show all at once onto their platform. More recently, they’ve been fiddling with the whole interactive content, with it culminating last year in the form of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, a feature-length program that allowed audiences to choose their own adventure, so to speak.

While most people seemed to enjoy the film for what it was, there is no denying it felt more like a proof of concept than the endgame of what they were striving for. But, regardless, it was a big hit, and it’s seemingly encouraged them to dive more into this mode of thinking. While delivering a keynote presentation at the conference FICCI-Frames, VP of product Todd Yellin said:

“It’s a huge hit here in India, it’s a huge hit around the world, and we realized, wow, interactive storytelling is something we want to bet more on. We’re doubling down on that. So expect over the next year or two to see more interactive storytelling. And it won’t necessarily be science fiction, or it won’t necessarily be dark. It could be a wacky comedy. It could be a romance, where the audience gets to choose – should she go out with him or him.”

This seems to be the next natural way to progress things as the streaming platform continues to evolve. After all, they need to continue to find ways to differentiate themselves from the competition, especially with so many new platforms launching this year.

But what do you think? Do you ever see this as a viable method of consumption down the line? Or will it always be a novelty? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
