Netflix Planning Black Mirror Choose Your Own Adventure

Netflix has been experimenting with choose your adventure forms of storytelling for some time now. They have the Puss In Book series that allowed kids to pick certain choices in the story, and they’ve been expressing their desire to make their shows more interactive for a while…but when would we see more solid proof of this desire? It sounds like it may be closer than we expect, and it’s using the perfect property to test it out on.

According to Bloomberg, we will be able to see first TV episodes utilizing this feature by the end of the year, but most notably, one episode will be from their popular series Black Mirror. However, based on the wording of the piece, it may be that the actual branching stories may be few and far between, as it states that users will be able to choose how the show ends, more specifically.

Does this mean we will only get to make decisions later on down the line, or will it just be one or two key choices throughout? Well, I think that may have been just a poor choice of words from the source piece, as it goes on to say that the Black Mirror episode will have more complex choices offered than Puss in Book, which is great news, as it will encourage viewers to revisit these key points and follow the story through.

Given its sci-fi and anthological nature, Black Mirror pretty much the perfect test dummy, as each episode stands alone, with each utilizing a completely different setting, cast of characters, and overall style and structure. With the exception of the title, they bear little resemblance to each other, making this move from Netflix a perfect one, as it won’t taint the franchise as a whole.

Black Mirror isn’t the only project they’re looking at. They’re also looking at experimenting with this format for future potential film productions — though because of the extensive amount of work this would mean for writers and filmmakers alike, they still seem to be sorting out the pay, as more work would generally mean more pay, even if the film doesn’t result in more eyes to their platform.
